Who we are:
Avenir Sports is Ireland’s leading Performance Analysis company, working with many of the top teams in Irish Sport. We provide video based performance analysis software and services for teams at all levels. These services include capturing of footage, analysis and dissemination of this analysis. We are the master distributor of Hudl and SportsCode by Hudl performance analysis software on the island of Ireland.
We work with some of the country’s leading teams including all I.R.F.U. national teams and the four provinces in rugby, all FAI international teams in soccer. In the G.A.A. we work with the footballers of Dublin, Tyrone, Kerry, Galway, Meath, Armagh, Mayo, Cavan, Waterford and Tipperary and the hurlers of Tipperary, Galway, Cork, Waterford, Clare, Limerick and Wexford.
We are the Performance Analysis Partners to the Irish Hockey Association as well as the Football Association of Ireland and have links with various other Sports Governing bodies within Irish Sport.
Avenir Sports are seeking suitable candidates for a 4 month experiential learning course starting on the 8th of June who are looking to gain practical, hands-on experience while learning from experienced mentors in a leading edge Performance Analysis company.
The course will be based in our Performance Solutions Centre in Galway and will be linked to projects run in conjunction with the FAI, the FAI Coach Education Department, Munster Rugby, Connacht Rugby and Galway G.A.A.
There will be 2 types of course attendance options for participants:
- A 4 month Full-time Experiential Learning course.
- A 4 month Part-time Experiential Learning course (1 day per week + 6 weekends)
Both the Full-time and Part time courses are endorsed by:
- Gerard Dunne, Head Analyst for the Republic of Ireland Senior men’s soccer team
- George Murray – Head Analyst at Munster Rugby
- Simon Kavanagh – Head Analyst at Connacht Rugby
The 4 month residential experiential learning course will require that participants be based in our Performance Solutions centre in Galway on a full-time basis in order to gain the experience of the day to day activities of a professional Performance Analyst.
The 4 month part-time course will require that participants be based in our Performance Solutions centre in Galway one day per week along with a minimum of 1 weekend per month throughout the duration of the course. This will afford the participants the opportunity of continuing in their current employment / studies while still gaining the theoretical knowledge associated with being a professional Performance Analyst. They will also gain hands-on experience with a team on at least 6 occasions throughout the course.
We are currently in negotiations with the National University of Ireland, Galway to get an academic accreditation incorporated into our course.
Previous course participants have secured full-time employment in the Performance Analysis industry working for professional rugby teams both in the UK and Ireland and also with our software providers, Hudl. Avenir Sports has also employed previous course participants in full-time positions within our company.
Current course participants have gained invaluable experience to-date across a range of sports with the FAI as remote analysts for the Ireland World University Games team in Taipei, various inter-county and club teams in G.A.A providing video and analysis solutions along with covering the Performance Analysis needs of the Macron Galway Cup.
All courses will follow a strict selection process and previous experience in the field both academic and work based will be taken into account. Internationally recognised SportsCode and Hudl Software accreditation will be awarded.
The FAI Analysis Department, Munster Rugby Analysis Department and Connacht Rugby Analysis Department are happy to endorse the Avenir Sports 4 month experiential learning course and we see value in a Potential Performance Analyst gaining this unique experience.
We agree to consider participants who complete this course and receive the relevant accreditation for potential positions within the FAI Analysis Department, Munster Rugby Analysis Department and Connacht Rugby Analysis Department.
The courses will cover a number of performance solutions areas:
- Performance Analysis (utilising SportsCode, Hudl software etc.)
- Notational Analysis
- Wearable technology including GPS.
- Role of the Performance Analyst.
- Sports Coaching.
- How to start your own P.A. business.
- Communication Skills etc.
Practical experience / placements with International, Professional, Inter- County and Club / School across number of Sports will form a defining section of our courses.
Guest Lecturers and Speakers
Leading practitioners in the Performance Analysis field including Head Analysts at International Team level from a number of National Governing Bodies will take sessions / modules on the course.
Head of Sport & Leisure at CIT & Kildare Senior Football Manager
Cian is Head of the Dept. of Sport, Leisure & Childhood Studies in Cork Institute of Technology, having previously spent 13 years (2000-2013) in the University of Limerick lecturing on the Sports Science, Physical Education and MSc. Sports Performance programmes. His research interests include the physiological measurement of elite sports performance and the role of performance analysis in coaching science. O’ Neill and colleagues have published numerous peer-reviewed research papers in the coaching science and performance analysis domains in recent years, enhancing the knowledge in this broad sports coaching space with a particular focus on Gaelic games.
Away from academia, as Coach to the Kerry Senior Football Team from 2013-15, (All Ireland Champions 2014, Munster Football Champions 2013-15), Coach to Mayo in 2012 (Connacht Champions & All Ireland Finalists) and Fitness Coach to the Tipperary Hurlers from 2008-11 (All Ireland Champions 2010, Finalists 2009/10/11, Munster Champions 2008/09/11), O’ Neill’s coaching record at inter-county level led to an 8th consecutive All Ireland semi-final and a 6th All Ireland final in 7 years in 2015. He has also coached numerous club teams to county and provincial honours in recent years (Newtown Shandrum, Cork & Munster Hurling Champions 2009, Monaleen, Limerick Football Champions in 2010, Moorefield, Kildare Football Champions in 2014). In November 2015, Cian took on the role of Manager to his native county, Kildare, and guided them to back-to-back promotions from Division 3 to Divisions 1 and also led them to their first Leinster Final appearance in 8 years in July 2017.
Cork City FC – Head of Football Analysis
Lisa is an ambitious, diligent, football coach who works at the elite level of professional men’s football since 2011. She has a keen eye for detail with a passion for the tactical side of the game and specialises in tactical strategy, motivation, team culture and performance coaching to influence outcomes and results.
UEFA Pro Licence candidate – Irish FA 2017-2018.
Student on League Manager Association’s (LMA) Diploma in Football Management 2018-2019.
Full-time employee of Cork City Football Club and also works with Northern Ireland Senior Men’s National Team.
Backroom team member, Dublin Senior Football 2018.
She has extensive experience at the highest level of professional football in Ireland, including successfully challenging for major domestic honours over past four seasons, including winning the league and FAI Cup double in 2017, four campaigns in UEFA Europa League (including group stages 2011) whilst having experienced the preparations required to qualify for and make an impact at major international tournaments including European Championships (2016) and two World Cup Qualifying campaigns. (Since Aug 2012)
Lisa has managed a senior men’s team in Ireland and also been Head Coach to Shamrock Rovers women’s team at Women’s National League level prior to her current roles with Cork City FC and Northern Ireland. Also was a member of the coaching staff of the Irish Men’s University squad 2013-2014.
FAI – Coach Education Manager
Niall O’Regan, A Current UEFA Pro Licence Candidate on the Irish Football Association (IFA) Course to finish in June 2018. Niall, who is currently completing research with University College Cork on the area of “Coach Education in the Football Association of Ireland” describes himself as a lifelong learner. Niall, in cooperation with Dr. Seamus Kelly, (University College Dublin) has a paper published on the topic of coach education in the International Sports Coaching Journal (ISCJ), to be released in June 2018.
Niall has a long history in both academia and football education, a former teacher having completed a First-Class Honours BEd Sports Studies and Physical Education (including history) in 2011 in University College Cork. Niall thrives to achieve an ethos of lifelong learning within his role as Coach Education Manager with the Football Association of Ireland. As part of this role Niall is an advocate of the importance of performance analysis and performance solutions within coaching and coach education and he identifies the “significant important role Avenir Sports plays within the development of coaches in Ireland through performance analysis and performance solutions.”
Tipperary Hurling – Head Performance Analyst
Damien is currently lecturing on the full time BA Sports Strength and Conditioning course at Limerick IT Thurles. He is the performance analyst for the Tipperary senior hurlers for the past ten years. Damien is currently undertaking a PhD in the physical demands of hurling. He has recently published three research papers describing the match-play demands of hurling. He has investigated the differences between club and county physical demands, U21 county positional demands and his latest paper describes the worst-case scenario periods in senior elite hurling.
Adding to his research he has presented at numerous events including the national GAA conference (2006, 2008 and 2016). Damien is a Level 2 Coaching Ireland Tutor with over 15 years of experience delivering GAA sports specific coaching courses and a wide range of CPD courses to tutors, coaches and players. He has developed sports specific coaching content for both the GAA and Camogie associations, which is delivered worldwide.
FAI – Head Performance Analyst
Gerard is the Head Performance Analyst to the Republic of Ireland Senior Men’s team and oversees the Performance Analysis Department in the FAI. He is a current UEFA Pro Licence student and a UEFA GK ‘A’ Licence Tutor with over 16 years’ experience in International Football.
Academically he holds an MSc in Sport and Exercise Management from UCD and is a current MSc Sports Performance Analysis student. He lectures for five years on the IT Carlow Sports Coaching and Management Hons Degree Performance Analysis Module.
Ulster University – Lecturer in Sports Development and Coaching
Jim Lowther has been working in Higher Education for the last 14 years mainly lecturing in performance analysis, coaching, sport psychology and sports development.
In September 2004, he joined Kingston University as a senior lecturer where he was the course director for the MSc in Sports Coaching Science and the BSc (Hons) in Sports Analysis and Coaching. In December 2010, he joined the Ulster University (Jordanstown) to lecture on its MSc programme (Sports Development and Coaching) and its various UG programmes.
He is a former football development officer and sports science coordinator having worked at Wimbledon FC from 1991-2001. Jim is a BASES accredited sport scientist (applied support-psychology) and he has worked as a sports science and coaching advisor to a number of organisations (Crystal Palace FC Academy, London Welsh RFC, Surbiton Hockey Club, Football Association). Since October 2016, he has been working with Roscommon GAA senior men’s team to help the staff develop a high performance culture. Within all of the above organisations, he has seen the various uses of PA and advised the coaches accordingly regarding the quality of feedback in the coaching process.

The position on the course is suited to someone with a solid academic background and a range of skills and experience, including:
- Personal attributes including self motivation, confidence, team player, excellent time management and a flexibility.
- Position will be based in Galway.
- Solid written and spoken communication skills.
- IT literate (with Mac experience).
- Experience of Sportscode by Hudl Sports Performance Analysis software.
- Some relevant Performance Analysis experience.
- Full Drivers Licence.
Performance Analysis qualifications are not necessary but a desire to be prepared for work in the Sports Performance Analysis Industry is essential.
